the height of the RAF,s vc10 fleet
just wondered...as i tent to do...[what was the peak in terms of numbers] of the RAF vc10 fleet?..id expect it was around the very early 1990,s which is quite funny really as the last vc10 was made way back in 1970..and..was it a greater number than the BOAC fleet at its very peak after they got there very last super delivered in 1969 [GARSG-R]? ..so who was the biggest operator?... the RAF in the 1990,s or BOAC in the groovy 1960,s.Also with Brize taking on so many extra vc10,s at that time did this ever cause problems?,as the modern Brize was only designed to have 14 vc10,s?..re sevice hangers, parts ect...i wonder how much spares came through from British Airways to support the new tanker fleet?, was there any really old boac items that came with the spares package?,origional boac seats, interior trim ect?,or was it basics like conways ect?..

In the mid to late 90s 101 Sqn had 14 Ks (5 K2s, 4 K3s and 5 K4s) and 10 Sqn must have had a similar number of C1Ks... So it must have been around 1997-99 when there were something like 28!

Yes, lots of stuff came from BA/BOAC, ground equipment, a/c spares, essentially anything VC10 related that BA just wanted rid off, even up until the end of servicing at St Athan spares would turn up that had been packed in the early 60's, whoever Tom M Scotney was he must have made a fortune packaging spares for the RAF 10 fleet.

I have just been stripping BOB of all her role equipment etc. over the past couple of days Keep patting the old girl each time I go in the front pax door. Trying to get the C of G as far forward as possible. Due to go to Cosford on Wed, 17th.
Checking my log book this frame and myself spent quite a lot of time in the Gulf in '91. What I learnt about Autopilot over that period with her! Shame

Re: the height of the RAF,s vc10 fleet
make sure she,s in tip top condition for cosford,i hope she goes indoors and painted back in her white top colours?,anybody got any stories about bob,s long career?..i think bob made the first oversea,s training flight for 10 squadron to hong kong on the 4th april 1967,and was a film star in a german film with larry hagman as already mentioned on this forum in 1989 painted in usaf colours...,give her a pat from me.. ....i always thought the americans might want an example as they fought side by side with our vc10 tankers on more than few occasions?.Laurieg wrote:I have just been stripping BOB of all her role equipment etc. over the past couple of days Keep patting the old girl each time I go in the front pax door. I went up to Cosford on Sunday as I've not been there for years... not sure where she will be parked. but there is not a hanger big enough or with any room available. There was a C130 parked where the BA VC10 used to be and I would guess BOB will eventually go next to that... perhaps a campaign to build another hanger at Cosford?

Hi Tonks
Good idea re: new Hangar for Bob. RVM was in a poor state when I saw it at Cosford in 2004/5 and I wouldn't like to see Bob go the same way.
Best wishes.

Re: the height of the RAF,s vc10 fleet
It's been a while since you asked this question, but it stuck in my head and I made a graph to get it all clear:vc10boy wrote:just wondered...as i tent to do...[what was the peak in terms of numbers] of the RAF vc10 fleet?..id expect it was around the very early 1990,s which is quite funny really as the last vc10 was made way back in 1970..and..was it a greater number than the BOAC fleet at its very peak after they got there very last super delivered in 1969 [GARSG-R]?
It shows that the peak in numbers lies in 1968,1969 and 1970 when BOAC operated 28 VC10s (the red bars in the graph). They never had all the 29 VC10s at the same time as G-ARVA had been sold in 1968 while the last Super wasn't delivered until 1969. Now I haven't looked at the precise dates so there may have been a bit of an overlap.
The RAF operated 28 VC10s in total, but the peak in numbers are the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 when 27 VC10s were flying (the blue bars in the graph). XR809 left the fleet early and the K4s weren't completed until 1995. This graph is based on the first flight dates though, not the delivery dates so the numbers might be slightly different if I use those. It does mean that over those years 27 RAF VC10s were flying, either in service or undergoing testing prior to delivery.

what a fantastic graph..really great, thank you jelle...I notice all in all the RAF had 38 VC10,s at one time or another on her books out of the 54 that where produced...thats alot of vc10,s..thats a huge number for any large airline

Re: the height of the RAF,s vc10 fleet
The most in service was in the 1990s: 27. That was 14 on 101 Sqn and 13 on 10 sqn - precisely half the toal number built.
The RAF did have some other airframes but they were being broken for spares.

Re: the height of the RAF,s vc10 fleet
In this graph I only listed those that were flying at one point or another. Indeed the RAF owned 10 more but none of those ever flew again after going into storage, they were all broken up for spares to support the Ks that did go into service. Based on this you could state that the RAF owned the largest number of VC10s (38), but the largest operator has to be BOAC as they had 28 flying VC10s around the same time while the RAF had 27 at the peak of its VC10 operations.
