Re: Standard VC10 operations
The pacific route into Sydney was initially operated by Standards (nice short hops LHR-JFK-LAX-HNL-NAN-SYD) but Supers had largely taken over by 1971. This followed the route extension to Melbourne. Perhaps it gave more flexibility when Supers were operating the Sydney-Darwin-Hong Kong route which effectively made it a "round-the-world" service.
A few routes needed the extra capacity of the Supers and particularly the small extra range it offered. On other routes Standards and Supers seemed to be used fairly randomly, although I expect there was a great masterplan behind it all somewhere.

Rather belatedly I have just read an e-mail that said the Super VC10 was operating the London- Sydney route in 1971. Absolute codswallop.

A bit of a harsh first post, eh Bazza?
So what did operate on that route in 1971?

Hello Barry.
For the record, I operated MEL-SYD-NAN-HNL-LAX-JFK on the BA592 over a period of seven days in November 1971 and every sector was a Super according to my logbook.
