Speedbird, the complete history of BOAC - Now available

Post by Jelle Hieminga »

It is available now from Amazon and other suppliers: Speedbird - The Complete History of BOAC. A book that was commissioned in 1960, delayed and then scheduled for publication in 1976 but cancelled. Embargoed for years by British Airways but now finally in print! 500 pages of meticulously researched information by Robin Higham, Emeritus Professor of History at Kansas State University, who was asked to undertake this task by Sir Basil Smallpeice, then Managing Director of BOAC.

I haven't gotten very far in it yet (only had it for a day by now) but first impression is that this is a serious book. The story behind it makes it interesting in itself but that only distracts from Mr. Higham's impressive work. And of course we cannot discount the fact that it boasts a very suitable illustration on the front cover!

The Amazon link above allows you to browse through the book itself as well.

Just having browsed through What's on Amazon. I see it lists an illustration of the North Side Check-in tents. I'm young enough to remember seing those :(

If anyone wants a copy of this, I purchased one, but it is rather wordy, so I doubt I'll ever get round to reading it. It is brand new. Cost me £19.20. Will post for £18.

pm me if you're interested.
