Further official word from CAF at Newquay...
The VC-10 is expected at 10.30, with several approaches before landing at 11.01 - the closest we could get to 101 Sqn!
A water cannon salute will welcome the aircraft as she taxies into our compound.
"Unfortunately the RAF will be removing the engines from the aircraft".
Hi All
Its a pity it cant be kept intact as to have this in a ground running condition would be a huge draw.
Are the engines of use to the RAF as they wont have any aircraft to put them in soon? Surely they can do without four of them as they must have a cupboard full of them now.
cheers
Shane

Further to this...
Apparently the CAF didn't take the option to purchase the engines, so never wanted the aircraft as a ground runner. Instead, according to senior CAF people, the interior will be converted to a diner, with the aircraft kept parked OUTSIDE their hangar.
Remember, CAF only stated "will go on display
at the CAF hangar".
Unlike at Bruntingthorpe, where they pretty much have the airfield to themselves for ground running events, those that were at Newquay could see the airport is no where near as suitable, with a lot of restrictions and a quite distant runway, mostly out of sight from the CAF area. They are still hoping to run the (fully intact) 1-11, so we'll see what they make of that.

I still think it's better than having it chopped up into tiny pieces and being made into Baked Beans cans. Turning it into a diner sounds pretty naff though, not the best way to honour such a fine aircraft!

It would be nice if the airgraft is being gutted to convert to a diner, if they could keep at least one of the tanks in the fuselage so the punters can see some of what the aircraft did, maybe behind a perspex barrier????
Hopefully one of the 'Super' tanker conversions will survive intact (inside as well as outside)

Thats a realistic (and mature) response to the plans. I'm sure CAF won't let it 'fall apart' being kept outside either.

Those of us here who are involved are waiting to hear exactly what will happen and when. I understand that all the tanks will be removed, the remaining fuel having been removed from the wing tanks. The flight deck area will remain intact and available to view by visitors. As for going in the hangar, well not sure where that came from but I doubt it will fit, too long and maybe too high but I haven't measured it. This cantalever hangar was built specifically to house three Nimrods, two nose in and one tail in between them, a top and tail arrangement if you like. Although it is big, its nothing like Base Hangar thats for sure. Can't see its possible myself. I have also heard of it being repainted back into Transport Command White and grey.....never was of course.
I am not keen on the plans at all really but at least there is a plan to keep her healthy. As for being a runner, it never was on the cards. The airport would have been up for it though they have been very good to the museum. The runway is not that far away 200m or so, a safe distance. The engines had to be dropped, even had to have their photo's taken beside her as confirmation of removal. The museum has kept on outboard engine that will be displayed in the hangar in due course but didn't take the option on the other three.....simply couldn't afford it, only so much money available as I understand it. The engine panels, we have, and will be refitted once a suitable framework can be made, so she won't look quite so bare.
Does anyone know whether ZA150 at Dunsfold still has her engines in ?
For now I get to show people around this wonderful aircraft and consider myself lucky to be allowed to do so. I had one chap in tears, he was so overwelmed with the experience. She means so much to so many, even I have been suprised. I do hope the powers that be have a change of heart and we find another way to raise funds.
Come see her soon if you can.
Chris

AFAIK ZA150's engines are still in. And if they have been dropped, they will probably go back in as Brooklands is trying to keep her live.
