So do 2 halves make a whole in this case then? :-)////)

Andy, you have about 10 billion (or thereabouts) VC10 models to play with and the Newquay one isn't a million miles away. My closest VC10 is 120 miles away at Dunsfold and not accessible!

Surely the Newquay one is closer for you??

I know I will have to sell my whole VC10 collection and buy a VC10 fuselage :)

But was it ever used for anything other than idle curiosity?
As for other AC with a periscope it seems some of the V-bombers having had them, or there are mentions of this, but no other civil AC. There have been some very similar looking devices appear on ebay but too short to be a VC10 example so something had them

Yes the V Bombers (Vulcan, Victor, Valiant) had periscopes, the Vulcan had 3 mounting points for it and mention of the Shackleton having one too. Interesting discussion about it here and plenty else on Google as well;

Andy, ZA148 is 144 miles from me, so only 20 miles further than ZA150 but at least accessible, but it's 140 miles too far

The Periscope Sextant is a shorter one and would have been used on the the flightdeck through the aperture in the roof there. I have seen the manuals for a Mark 1 and 2 on ebay recently but have yet to see the actual periscope sextant for sale yet. I'm sure I've missed one though, like to get one for 148. Would it have been a Mark 1 or 2?

There is also the hole in the radio bay door underneath. I was unaware of this until Jelle pointed it out recently. There isn't a mount here, no pressure seal, would the longer periscope from the rear have just been "dangled" for want of a better word, down through this hole to check the underside? Did the engineer literally stand on his head to get his eye to it? I guess only used at lower altitude?

More questions than answers...... sorry

Chris

The sextant looks quiet different from the odd photos I have seen of it, these shorter ones look just like the one I have but shorter

My example has arrived, all in one piece, and is quite an impressive piece of kit!

It has a different serial number than the one in the auction, mine reads 117/KH/62- I wonder if this indicates a date of manufacture (1962)? It also has a sticker, marked Fenns (Farnborough) Ltd and dated February 1995. I see from a Google search they specialise in night vision goggles, so I'm guessing they either serviced it or reconditioned an ex-BA one for RAF use.

Now I need to find some practical use for it :D

Mounted on a mahogany stand and put on top of the fireplace :D

Alternatively shove it through the letterbox everytime the postman walks up the driveway

...... or bring it with you when you come to see 148 and you can try it out.

Thanks Chris, I think I might just do that! I reckon I might get some funny looks walking around armed with a periscope like John Mills in Above Us The Waves

I have found it very goo for chwcking what has been left on top of cupboards wheb you have lost somtbing, other than that I have yet ti find a real use for it! Mine has the box which seems to devalue it, but makes carting it about easier
