I would have preferred to have seen half of a 10 sqn machine painted in original colours tbh. Right idea I guess, but something about Bob's tail looks a bit odd.

Looks terrible. A complete lack of effort from the painters, especially when you consider that this is our oldest airframe and the amount of service it's completed...

...and also when you consider some of the markings on the Merlins, Tornados and Typhoons to name a few. If there can be orange tiger striped Tornados, multiple Red Arrows and the Black eagles etc, I can't see why it couldn't of been a more comprehensive design.

I was given some of the designs by the sqn personnel and there were some very good ones - 1 of which has basically chosen but was deemed too complicated. I've reproduced it (with the authors permission) onto Flight sim. I've got some snaps which I will upload in a moment...

Can I just say, this is obviously a personal opinion!

The original authors work:

Sorry it's a dusk shot... Hopefully that works.

I then edited it to complete the aircraft from the zig zag below, and the nose, to a chrome/grey colour...

At airport: http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... 33-537.jpg
Light effects didn't quite work but you get the idea: http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... 29-271.jpg
Personal favourite: http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... -3-378.jpg
Above the clouds: http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... 24-774.jpg

Imagine that at an airshow or an airport...

At least I get to fly it whenever I like I suppose, but it's not the same! :(

DM.

EDIT:
Sorry, it saved a bit smaller than hoped. Basically the writing on the Nacelles says '50 Years of VC10 Flying' with a VC10 outline behind it, and the tail is a Union Jack (obviously!) with RAE trim top and bottom (don't see much of it and they have a VC10!) a 101 Lion with 101 Squadron and 1917-2012 in the middle, and then a couple of logos on the bottom RAE trim - 10 Sqn badge, BAE Systems, Rolls Royce and BA. Nice little touch in the form of the registration on the tail bullet as a nod to the past.

The paint team applied the scheme exactly to the specifications stipulated by Air Command. Your "lack of effort" comment is unjustified. The team have many years experience and were potentially capable of much better but weren't authorised to do so. They simply did what was asked of them and they had no involvement in the design process whatsoever.

Secondly, you cannot compare what schemes have been painted on (small) fast jets in modern purpose built spray booths with those of large aircraft in an uncontrolled hangar environment. For the VC10 in particular, access to the aircraft fin and upper areas is very poor in base hangar and there is no air extraction so spraying is prohibited under health and safety law. All paint in base hangar is brushed and rolled, so 'fancy' is very much out of the equation.
