Hi
This is my first post on here
I didnt really know where to post this on this forum so sorry if this is in the wrong place
The vc-10 website provides a superb list of models but i am just a little curious over the 1/72 vc-10 magna models kit.
Has anyone built this kit, and is it any good?
Thanks

High FD...

Welcome to the sight. I think charlie had one but not sure he built it. Should be able to let you know the quality though. Just seen one sold on eBay for £97!

That built one is advertised as the Airfix 1/144 scale model... very different to the 1/72 one that FD is on about...

Thant's OK :)

A 1/72 VC10 is a beast of a model... I have a travel agents model of a 10 at roughly 1/72 and it is pretty big... looks great though even though it is not particularly accurate (in terms of detail). Looks great in BOAC colours though

I did indeed own one at one stage! I went on an adventure to The Aviation Hobby Shop (TAHS) in West Drayton to buy it. When I asked if they had a Magna VC10, I received a quizzical look (accompanied by a sucking of teeth!).

Having taken it home and opened the box, it was a beast. I have a photo of the kit somewhere (in fact, I think it's on Jelle's main site). After about 6 months of looking at it, I sold it on ebay, along with the XV105 90th decals for £120 (cost - ignoring ebay fees). I even go a couple of rude messages informing me how rude I was selling it at list price!

I guess it was just a bit too much for me to handle; I've built a few small resin kits, but this was huge. 5 years and two kids later, I think it was probably a "safe" decision!

[edit] Photos here!:

I can't remember where the decals (not in the photos) came from. Somewhere in East Anglia I think.

Oh Lord!
I've built one of these things and have two left to build when I summon the strength. If anyone wants to have a go at building one of these then please make sure you buy lots of wet and dry to sand them down!

My beast took four coats of primer and dozens of hours of sanding and filling due to thousands of pinholes. In the end you do get a lump of resin that looks a bit like a VC10. But, boy do you have to work to get it!

I've said it before and at risk of sounding like a winging old git I'll say it again. At the moment no-one produces a decent model of the VC10 in any scale. I think I've built all that are on or have ever been on the market in 1/144 & 1/72 scale. Even the die casts have their issues.

I remember as a youngster completing an Airfix model of ZA141, in all her original glory, must of been very early 80's. Spent hours trying to improve Airfix's interpretation of the real thing that stood in the AAH in front of the Apprentice training bay at Filton.
