Strange piece of wire in coclpit ?

Post by coling »

:? Can anybody tell me what the piece of wire is for that is stretched across and above the casing of the instrument panel. ??

It has been suggested by some of us at CAF Newquay that it is to line up on a refuelling drouge when refuelling from another tanker ?

Can't think what else it is used for !

Cheers

It has been on the VC10 since the early days. I believe due to the shape of the coming there wasn't a clear horizontal reference on the approach so a BOAC captain came up with the 'washing line' idea.

Strange piece of wire in coclpit ?

Hello, have a look at this page, it includes the story of 'Rendall's washing line':
http://www.vc10.net/History/Individual/GARVF.html

The reason is as Paul stated, to provide a horizontal reference. More about 'Flaps' Rendall here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituar ... ndall.html
Buttons . . . check. Dials . . . check. Switches . . . check. Little

As a bit of additional info, lack of the washing line was a No Go item

It was great for hanging your charts over or drying wet gloves!
