I was in a VC10 'incident' that is not mentioned. I cannot remember the year. I thought it was early 80s, but must have been late 70s. I was flying from the Gulf to London, via Beirut that had just reopened - although half the airport building had burned down during the war.
We were in a VC10 to our surprise as we though they were no longer in use by BA.
At Beirut the rear steps were moved away and the driver attempted to go under the wing. The handrails at the top of the steps rammed at least a foot into the rear of the wing causing extensive damage. It really rocked the aircraft. In fact the Captain asked to borrow a camera to photograph the damage.
After an hour or two we continued to London on an MEA plane.
The VC10 was so badly damaged I imagined it would be a write off, but have seen nothing about it.

I just finished the book Sky Talk and Behind the Cockpit Door, which mention the VC-10. And a BOAC video on YouTube. In 1987(??) I was at Palm Springs as a private pilot and a VC-10 was on the ramp. Prince Charles was there and the airport was closed… I couldn’t fly out. Bob Hope was stuck there too and came and took a slice of a pizza I had ordered. Anyway… I’m feeling like I missed something and now I’ve got to visit a museum to see this plane!

Lived at Newstead Abbey until 1960 and often watched RR’s fleet of test aircraft such as the Lanc with a Dart in the nose. Used to visit my friend Derek Martin when I flew into Hucknall. On a visit 27-28/6/71 Derek suggested that due to heavy rain I put the a/c in the hanger. When they opened the door there was G-ALGT the Griffon Spit, RR’s HS125 which were both flown by Cpt.Frank Kirk, my old instructor, and the RB211 test VC10.
