A great site for an aircraft that is often overlooked. But Jelle did a great job in building this site and I give it a big thumbs up for this MONUMENT for the VC10, keep it up!

Sorry to inform you that my book on the VC10 is now out of print. I hope to update the book, when the aircraft leaves service.

I flew the VC10 from 1971-77 with 10 Sqn, and loved every minute of it. What an aircraft. I am sure that there are folks out there who would remember my last departure from Gan just before the closure! I could write a book about the great times that we had, but then some good books have already been written about this lovely aircraft. Great site by the way, and for all those ex 10 Sqn folk out there, how's about a VC10 reunion?

Hi,

When I was a kid of nine years old my Dad got a job with Gulf Air in charge of ground crew at Dubai Airport. I remember my first ever flight on a big jet was on a Gulf Air VC10 with my family from Heathrow to Dubai in 1975. I remember meeting the Captain during the flight and being awed at the sight of the flight deck. I think we also stopped to refuel at Damascus? I can still picture the aircraft in my mind as we walked out to it across the Heathrow tarmac with its Gulf Air colours gleaming on a sunny day. I also remember the Stewardesses waring very smart uniforms with a type of vale draped from their hats.=)

I lived on the Lloyd Leas estate at the end of Changi's runway 1969/70 and the sight and sound of this magnificent aircraft never failed to inspire. It was admiration, when the sleek shape, with the distinctive whine of throttled-back engines, came into view around 4pm on its final approach to the airfield.. And frustration, when at 7pm, Rolls-Royce's finest would open up and brutally obliterate all manner of discourse for the best part of a minute as the '10' powered down the runway for Gan! Still the best-looking aircraft around after 35 years.
Happy, happy days.=)=)=)

As an Army brat, the VC10s always took us somewhere more pleasant than rain-soaked 70s England. Now I just love 'em for the beautiful example of British design and (over) engineering that they are. I have the greatest admiration for those who have preserved these great machines, and envy for those who have worked on or flown them.=)

Worked with both XR and XV (Victoria Cross) series at Muharraq 1968-69 in operations. No other aircraft hadthe same impact as the 'Ten'. Used to be known as the 'Moonrocket' (full of round white faces) outbound from the UK and 'Throbber' (work it out yourself) going home. Absoulutly ruined our outdoor cinema when she was taxying (landing lights blinded the screen - conways obliterated the soundtrack. When she left northbound towards Kharg Island it was climb power to 42,000 feet we could hear her in Bahrain for ages. Very emotive. No prettier aircraft flew then or now. The night shot of XR810 on the QTR pan was taken when I was there. The original photo was 3' x 2' and raffled - I think.

Worked on the VC10 At Brize for about 6 wonderful Years as a "Sooty" on LSS (A Shift) until I Left the RAF in 89 ish and still miss em..... We also visited Brooklands as a Volunteer Work Party from the RAF to treat the outside with some special sealer to help preserve the Sultands old Girl, glad to see she is still being looked after, I signed the fuselage just under the Stb tailplane before sealing it over, often wondered how long it lasted.... wonderful days and probably the only time in History an RAF Sherpa Minibus has negotiated part of the famous banked track at speed...... Frighting =)=)
