Routings and Timetables

One of my goals on this site is to collect a database of routings that the VC10 flew. To start with, I've compiled a page with two timetables from BOAC, showing the services for the summers of 1966 and 1968, an Air Malawi route map and a Gulf Air timetable. I'm hoping to add more information in the future, so please get in touch if you have a timetable from a later date, or another operator, to share.

Air Ceylon timetable

This timetable shows that Air Ceylon used a lot of code-sharing (if it was called that in those days) operations, as only the AE118/116 and AE115/117 schedules used Air Ceylon flight numbers. But even these flights were operated using BOAC VC10s with Air Ceylon stickers as the airline did not operate its own VC10s in 1969.

Air Malawi Route Map and timetable

This route map shows the routes served by Air Malawi. It is safe to assume that the longer trips were done with their single VC10 7Q-YKH which is also featured on the front of the brochure. The timetable shows the different routes flown in 1978, and the different types in use. The VC10 is shown as 'VCX' in these tables.

BOAC 1966 Summer Timetable

This timetable was published for the general public to enable them to plan their trips. It is worth a look for the various VC10 ads at the bottom of some of the pages. The timetable also includes the 707 schedules. When a route was flown with a VC10, the timetable doesn't tell us whether it was a Super or Standard VC10 unfortunately.

BOAC leaflets for services from Amsterdam

These brochures were printed to promote services to the USA from Amsterdam, via London.

'Daily flights by VC10 to Boston - Chicago - Detroit.' Including connecting flights from Amsterdam with a BEA Trident.

'Direct services from London to eight cities in North America.' Including connecting flights with KLM or BEA.

BOAC 1968 Summer Timetable

The timetables below are from the BOAC Operations Navigation Manual. This means that they were for BOAC internal use. Because of this they are split up into two sections covering the Standard and Super VC10 routes. It is interesting to see that the Super and Standard versions were mixed on some routes, there was no area that seemed to be exclusively covered by one version.

Ghana Airways Timetable

These timetables provide a nice overview of Ghana Airways' VC10 operations: The type was used throughout the week to connect London with Accra, and onwards to its neighbouring contries. By collaborating with Nigeria Airways it was able to provide a once-a-day service along the West African coast, using their Viscount flights. As the Ghana VC10 stopped over in Lagos, Nigeria, on its way to London, Nigeria Airways no doubt also sold seats on the VC10.

Gulf Air Timetable 1st April 1975

This Middle-Eastern operator only flew the VC10 for a few years, but they made good use of that time. The timetable below shows the network as it was in April 1975 and includes the 'Golden Falcon' services operated by the VC10s.

East African Airways timetable

This example was issued late in 1966, to go into effect on 1st January 1967. EAA only had two Super VC10s available at that point as the third one wouldn't be delivered until March 1967. They covered this by including several BOAC (BA flight numbers) flights in their schedule.

Middle East Airlines timetable

MEA issued this timetable at the end of 1968, to become effective at the end of January 1969. With 9G-ABP's demise on 28th December 1968, we can only wonder if they managed to fly this schedule, with a daily VC10 flight between London and Beirut, using only OD-AFA.

Nigeria Airways timetables

The VC10s on these Nigeria Airways timetables mostly referred to BOAC VC10s that were flown with Nigeria Airways stickers. The exception was G-ARVC that spent a year in full Nigeria Airways livery, during 1966. Another clue is in the BA flight numbers in the schedules.
