The old sim at Brize

Post by Murray Keene »

A question for Tonks and the current crew tasked with looking after our lady of grace at Brize.

I dont suppose the old 'moving map' sim is still surviving over at 10 sqn? I very much doubt it but it would have been nice to preserve that when they finish/ed with it

By the way I STILL have a contract out on the guy who trashed 806. Any names please? Or can I write to him at

Prisoner 31548967
Cell 247
Wormwood Scrubs
London
E1

 Best he stays anonymous to think of it, we were chatting about that incident during a curry with the 'old boys' the other night and his name is ****! Very stupid and if he had been paying attention that could have been avoided! We still CANNOT comprehend that this could happen with a trained engineer doing a defuel (or was he a little less than 8 hours from bottle to throttle we wondered?)

Sadly seen many silly things happen like movers sticking ten ton forks through the pressure skin REGULARLY on route aircraft - the jail is full of them. Caterers tipping over elevated trucks against the fuselage, it goes on. The stuff that we see here at LHR is amazing. Driving under wings with elevated work platforms is a good one. [sigh]

I belive they just updated the sims over the years... the old C1 was given computer visuals and a new K sim was produced with the introduction of the tanker.

They are still in very regular use... I have many hours in them.... joy :?

OMG they are so out dated now. I worked for Singer Link Miles for a while installing sims so of course we go to 'set them up' basically playing around in them. The full motion sims. I got to fly the airbus with the side stick WOW its like sitting at my desk at home on FS2004 so easy to fly. Make a mistake and the plane tells you of and puts it right.

Question Tonks. I am finding the 10 a pig to fly when I try to engage the so called 'autopilot'. When I was an eng on them I found it very unusual. Is it not just an ALT & HDG hold unit? There doesnt appear to be any of the refinements like ROC setting, step climb. I know she is supposed to have autoland but I dont trust it and always put her down hands on and feel for the ground watching the the ILS crosshairs/VASI.

I make a clean take off climb out to FL50 engage the AP and it just keeps try to stall even with the donks on max chat. Are there kneeboard or checklists available for this unit do you know? A little advice here would be appreciated. The sim provides nothing on it.

Even when programmed with a set GPS course its all over the place. I know this is fitted as I was on the team who FITTED 'Omega' to the whole fleet when it first trialled. She flies great hands on but a long flight is going to be tiring on stick the whole way. I think a little poetic licence is called for and I'll design her a 'glass' cockpit

When I went through the OCU at the end of 1986, I was on the last course to use the old sim. By then the model had been replaced with a basic computer generated visual system. The "new" tanker sim was already installed and running (if memory serves me right) and the new C1 sim was being approved as we trained on the old one.

The new sim was pretty good apart from the fact that it appeared to have no inertia in roll - giving it a roll rate like that of a Harrier, necessitating a very light touch on the yoke.

The sim is still a bit "light" in roll, though it has been improved over the years...

Probably because you have too much slug repellant!

These numbers come from my sim model
Moment of Inertia - Roll (slug-ft^2)=5000000
Moment of Inertia - Pitch (slug-ft^2)=8000000
Moment of Inertia - Yaw (slug-ft^2)=6000000
Moment of Cross Inertia -Roll-Yaw (slug-ft^2)=400

Murray, surely if you did not have any tail trim on the TOCW should have gone off! (Just noticed the thread).
Never had a GE's wallet. It was always empty when I got back but I always had a smile on my face :-)
