This arrived yesterday and I am really pleased with it, despite the price (though probably pretty reasonable bearing in mind that this is pretty rare!).
The chap who sold it was at Brize for most of the 70s as a Sgt. Air. Tech. on the Belfast and then the VC10, leaving in 1978. He said that they had a new Squadron leader Engineer put in charge at L.S.S. He was one of those people that was never satisfied with any effort made; swift to look for fault and blame and thus there was a crash in moral. There had also been a big drop in manpower due to redundancy as well a large TACEVAL, so,in his words some bright spark came up with the idea of the badge so they would all feel part of a team .He remembers they had two each and I thought that the number made was quite small, just for those on LSS at the time. It shows both the VC10 and the Belfast… can’t imagine there are many Belfast badges about and I would guess the numbers of this one were indeed small!
I remember one sqn commander who did not like us wearing the t shirts we got during Desert Storm under our flying suits so we all jad to buy the red 10 sqn one! Mine is still around somewhere complete with a stab hole where the lower TACAN aerial got me in my early days!!!!!
Never had a GE's wallet. It was always empty when I got back but I always had a smile on my face
