British civil jets- which broke even?

Post by Foxdelta211f-bvfd »

I was just reflecting on what a shame it was that no more vc-10's were made than just 54, but I was wondering if any other british jets made money for their manafacturers?
114 comets built. Comet probably never broke even
117 tridents built, didnt break even
14 concordes (plus 6 prototypes) built, bac and aerospeciale lost huge amounts of money
250 or so bac 1-11's - probably made money, although not sure
Vickers viscount made loads of cash for vickers
Vanguard- didnt make money
Britannia- didnt make money
Bae 146/avro rj/rjx- 350 or so made- i dont know if this broke even
Bae atp- didnt break even
Does anyone have any info on this?
It seems interesting how lots of the smaller british airliners (1-11,bae 146, hs 125,gulfstream) made a profit but sales of the larger ones suffered....

After the Comet I crashes it took a lot of persuasion for airlines to buy the Comet 4. It was always underpowered and in the Nimrod form an absolute nightmare to maintain.
HS invited the Americans over to see how to produce a three engined jet airliner. They went back home and promply produced the 727! Nobody wanted Concorde's sonic boom over their backyard so it was "given" to the UK and French airlines to play with. BA actually did make it profitable. AF Concordes were never profitable so they were pleased to use the Paris crash as an excuse to stop flying it. BA wanted to continue but EADS held all the spare parts in France and wouldn't let BA have them so forcing them also to stop flying.
As for the VC10 the political interference and BOAC bad mouthing is well documented.
Non of the British aircraft manufactures not even Vickers thought to create large production facilities to manufacture for the "world". They were all in effect small family businesses.
Plus government interference at every turn. They tried to cancel Concorde at least twice. And as for the TSR2 (not on your list) it has finally arrived in the form of the Typhoon!!

Most of the TSR2 technology appeared in the Tornado.

Gulfstreams are American not British.

1-11 made money because it was marketed for the world marketplace, whereas everything else was tailored to BOAC/BEA requirements, the problem with that was that British airlines changed their minds like the weather changes, Sir George Edwards believed that the VC10 was just too late coming to the market which severely limited its sales.
