Looking at the figures for the Super VC-10 was the maximum passenger figure set at 174 (in one class) due to the amount and arrangement of the emergency/entry doors?
Looking at the length of the aircraft you would expect it to be able to carry more. For example the A320 is only 123ft 3in and can carry around 179 passengers whereas the Super VC-10 is 171ft 8in and carry 174. I know the some of VC-10's length is made up from it long tail end, but still theres quite a difference in length, in that the Super is longer but carried less pax.
Why for such a large aircraft did it carry so few?
Thanks
Steve

I do not know if this is the answer but in the days of the VC10, (or should I say, the early days when it was in airline service), the seat pitch was probably a couple of metres,(welll, not that much).
In modern terms most airlines look for about 30 inch seat pitch so you can see how much more you can get in in cattle class.
As you say, modern airliners do not waste airframe size, (pilot's toecaps are probably scratching the back of the scanner). The 10's good looks come from the old era. (God bless 'em).

Never had a GE's wallet. It was always empty when I got back but I always had a smile on my face

Yes I think that the reason Laurie. However in the RAF for some silly reason we had to fly 'backwards'. That is we used to fit the seats reversed, they thought it made better crash worthiness. However - in a sudden decleration all the stuff at the BACK of the cabin thats not stropped down (loadmaster, trolly dolly etc) comes flying forward and hits you in the face, killing you instantly! Well done whoever dreamed up reverse seating.
During my RAF years I did many jobs, one was re rolling the aircraft from flat floor to seats, roller or vice versa or hybrids. I remember on some troopers and evacuation flights we had to fit those seats with about a FOOT between them, so I cannot imagine how many they packed in! We used a piece of wood cut to the [normal] pitch length to space the seats and on the troopers we couldnt even USE the stick as it wouldnt go in!
I flew thousands of happy miles in the 10 in its normal pitch role and it was marvellous to be able to stretch out like the rich in 1st class. Nowadays, being poor, I have to put up with cattle class and DVT!!! However I fly American now as they have had several law suits relating to DVT and they fly a wider pitch 32" I believe.
