RR Conways

Post by Wallasey 1 »

What happened to all the Co42 540 Conways from the Standard VC10's (later to be K2's but also refitted with the 301/550 Co43's I think) as all present RAF VC10's use the higher powered but in short supply 301/550 Co43. Are they just not powerful enough to use or have they been used for spares recovery. Or just scrapped. 8-[

I think the Co 42 were rated some 4000lbs lower than the 43s. So using them as is was probably not feasable. I know that the Cabin Compressors on the K3 and K4s are different to the C1K, (the output is different), so there is not a lot of spares recovery from that point, although there may be some common piece parts. At present we do rob from Ks to Cs, (or the other way), as the conversion is minimal but Sigma and the engine bay at BZN are doing a fantastic job turning the donks around.

This type of engine does need the old fashion approach to engineering, none of this 'sit on the flight deck and let the computer do the diagnosis' for us. Pure brain power 8). And a lot of TLC!
Never had a GE's wallet. It was always empty when I got back but I always had a smile on my face :-)
